There are different techniques for breast reduction surgery depending on your priorities and goals, including ways to reduce scarring, improve breast lift and symmetry or keep surgical costs to a minimum.

Among our specialty breast reduction techniques is the No Vertical Scar breast reduction, which eliminates the characteristic “lollipop” scar that typically runs down the center of the breast below the areola. In the No Vertical Scar technique, our surgeons only create a circular incision around the areola and a horizontal incision in the fold below the breast. This keeps visible scarring to a minimum, though it does create the appearance of a larger nipple-areola complex. This option is not available to every patient and will depend upon the size of your breasts and areolas. It also may not be covered by insurance plans that cover other breast reduction techniques.

We also provide traditional reduction mammoplasty that utilizes the vertical incision. This method allows for greater access to breast tissue and is most appropriate for women whose reduction requires more precision (e.g., removing a smaller amount of breast tissue or removing breast tissue from a particular area of the breast). This technique is more commonly covered by insurance. Though scarring from this procedure is more visible, all incisions typically heal well and leave flat, skin-toned scars.

During your initial appointment with our surgeons, you will discuss your goals and ideal outcomes. This, combined with their evaluation of your body type, will help your surgeon determine which technique will be best for you. We will thoroughly inform you about our recommendations and make sure you understand why we suggest a particular type of breast reduction for you.

Your Breast Reduction Procedure & Recovery

If we determine that you are a good candidate for the procedure, we will help you work through any necessary insurance paperwork and find a date to schedule your surgery. We perform breast reductions at our new, state-licensed surgi-center in Fayetteville or at local hospitals when insurance requires an in-network location. We use general anesthesia during the surgery to keep you comfortable.

During the surgery, your surgeon makes incisions according to your chosen technique and removes excess body tissues in your breasts. This may include breast-specific tissues, pockets of fat or stretched skin. Once the predetermined amount of tissue is removed and your breasts have been reduced to your desired size, the incisions are closed with tiny sutures and cleaned. Some patients choose to add other cosmetic procedures to their breast reduction to save on surgical costs or recovery time, such as liposuction, a tummy tuck or body lift. Your surgeon will perform all the agreed-upon procedures while monitoring you to ensure you are safely asleep and not in any danger of complications.

When your procedure is complete, you will be moved to a recovery area until you are awake from your anesthesia. After an hour or so, you will be cleared to return home to begin your recovery. You will need a designated friend or family member to wait during your surgery, pick you up and transport you home, since you will be woozy from your anesthesia and unable to drive yourself. Your surgeon will also go over recovery information one more time, so it is useful to have someone at your surgery who will be present during your recovery at home. We will also give you a thorough packet of written instructions including contact information to reach us should any questions arise. In addition, you will have several follow-up appointments with your surgeon to ensure that your recovery is on track.

Breast reduction patients are usually able to return to normal daily activities in about one week and may resume full activity including exercise and heavy lifting in three to four weeks. Recovery time will vary based on your overall health, the extent of your surgery and any additional procedures that you elected to have performed. Your surgeon will keep you informed about what to expect during your particular recovery as you create your surgical plan and as you go through the healing process.

Frustration with lifestyle limitations
