From reality TV to an at-home spa day, the idea of a makeover is always exciting. It’s an opportunity for transformation, whether it’s just a quick mood lift or a complete overhaul. But one common theme in makeovers is time — people can easily become too busy to take the time they need to achieve the appearance they want. And while this can happen to anyone, mothers in particular often fall prey to neglecting their own wants and needs.
Whether you are a stay-at-home mother or a working mother, a mother of one or many or a new mother or a mother of teenagers, you have certainly made sacrifices for your children. Too often, these sacrifices include your appearance. Perhaps pregnancy took a toll on your tummy, or your children’s extracurricular activities have cut into your exercise time. Maybe breastfeeding left sagging or stretch marks, or you just haven’t been able to shed the last of your baby weight even after a year or two.
If any of these scenarios sound familiar, you are not alone — these are some of the most common concerns that we hear from mothers who visit the Advanced Aesthetics Plastic Surgery Center. Since we want mothers everywhere to be able to feel confident and beautiful, we are proud to offer a suite of surgeries affectionately dubbed the “mommy makeover.” The mommy makeover is designed to address common concerns of women whose experience with pregnancy or motherhood has affected their body and body image.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding result in significant changes in the body — not only physical changes in appearance but also hormonal changes that disrupt the way the body responds to diet and exercise. Whether your baby bump left stretched skin on your abdomen, nursing caused your breasts to droop or motherhood has made it more difficult for you to lose your love handles, a mommy makeover might be right for you.
Mommy makeovers can include a range of procedures, including but not limited to:
When you choose a mommy makeover, your surgeon will perform the procedures you want as a single surgical package rather than individual operations. This saves our mommy makeover clients time and resources — lower surgical costs and combined recovery time are perfect for the busy mom with a family to care for.
Every mother is different with unique concerns and needs. Another important aspect of the mommy makeover is that it is entirely customizable, allowing you to pick and choose the procedures that make sense for you. Some women, for example, need a breast lift but not an augmentation; some may need a tummy tuck to address stretched skin rather than just liposuction. Your particular mommy makeover package will be carefully constructed after a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. During this important meeting, you’ll discuss everything from how your body has changed to your current lifestyle, ensuring that your surgeon can fully understand what you want and expect from your surgery. Your surgeon will make their best recommendations for how to accomplish your goals in a way that is accessible to you. Then, you can decide together which procedures you are ready to undergo.
Once your surgical plan is created, you will set a date for your procedure. Since everything will be done at once, you will only need to spend a few hours in surgery — no need for multiple visits or weeks of waiting between procedures. Depending on your particular surgeries, it may last anywhere from 4 to 8 hours. Your surgeon will use general anesthesia to keep you completely comfortable throughout the entire process. After spending about an hour in our recovery room, you will be released and able to return home with the help of a designated friend or family member.
If you are the primary caregiver for your family, you should arrange for help with childcare and household tasks for about a week after your surgery. For a few days, your range of movement will be limited and you should avoid movements like stretching or lifting, especially if you chose a tummy tuck or a breast procedure. Most of our mommy makeover clients can return to work and all day-to-day activities after about two weeks of rest. At about six weeks post-op, you will be feeling fully recovered and ready to reveal your new body.
As the initial swelling subsides, you will be able to see your results emerge over the course of a few weeks. A flatter belly, contoured curve and perkier, more rounded breasts will help you feel like your body finally reflects the inner beauty of motherhood. We often hear that our mommy makeover clients feel more energetic, more motivated to exercise and eat well, more confident and more positive. Living with a body that you don’t love can be draining on your self-esteem, and we at Advanced Aesthetics believe that no mother should have to feel this way. Our expert plastic surgeons can ensure that the results of your surgery give you a makeover that can extend beyond your appearance and into your outlook and attitudes.
