How Is Otoplasty Performed?
Otoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure in about 1 – 2 hours under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age and comfort level. During surgery, one of our plastic surgeons will make small incisions behind the ear to access the cartilage, allowing for reshaping, repositioning, or pinning the ears closer to the head. Excess skin or cartilage may be removed if needed to achieve the desired contour and balance. The incisions are then carefully closed with sutures, leaving scars discreetly hidden in the natural crease behind the ear. Most patients return home the same day and enjoy a noticeable improvement in ear appearance once healing is complete.
